TVA — cooling tower to come down

A controversial iconic landmark located in the far western section of the county is expected to be demolished next month.

Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) officials say the agency will implode the massive cooling tower at the former Hartsville Nuclear Plant site which straddles the Smith/Trousdale county line on Highway 25/Dixon Springs Highway.

While the demolition is planned for September, no specific date had been set for the implosion as of Wednesday (August 6), according to a TVA spokesperson.

“TVA has prioritized removal of the structure as part of its broader effort to remove obsolete infrastructure, improve public safety and prepare sites for future redevelopment opportunities. TVA teams and contractors will safely implode the Hartsville cooling tower in September,” according to a TVA spokesperson.

Demolishing the massive structure which was constructed to be in place for decades and perhaps over a century will be complicated.

“Safety is a top priority. TVA officials are working with multiple local, state and federal agencies to ensure the implosion is executed safely,” the spokesperson said.

“Removing the unused cooling tower will eliminate a longstanding safety risk associated with unauthorized access and aging infrastructure. The streamlining of this asset will help improve the overall safety and security of the surrounding area for both the public and first responders. TVA remains committed to unleashing American energy future by providing and maintaining a reliable, modern energy system while making sites like Hartsville safer and ready for tomorrow’s potential opportunities,” TVA officials say.

Hopefully they won’t implode it. Have you ever seen the dust sampling studies from the dust from other Cooling Tower implosions? It’s awful and illegal.

This is a little crazy. Hasn’t the TVA read the dust sampling reports from other cooling tower demolitions? The dust is hazardous. There are 10,000+ cases of cancer from exposure to the dust from the WTC collapse. The EPA investigated it and discovered that the biggest cause was Respirable Silica which is the main component in a dust cloud. It’s the stuff you don’t see that kills you. They are the microscopic particles that are pushed farther and faster and lodge deeper into lung tissue. They have the same pH as Liquid Drano. In addition to the respirable silica the dust contains mold and heavy metals.

True but this one was never used so other than concrete dust which is mostly lime that the plants will use readily it should be OK I know it will improve the site lines from my farm on the river over there
