School Board narrows candidates

The county’s school board will be interviewing six applicants to become the school system’s new director of schools.

The final six candidates include John Ash, Elizabeth Lackey, Mike Lytle, Jimmy Maynord, Bobby Storie and Tim Towns.

The six were selected from 10 applicants.

Originally, the school board received 12 applicants for the position.

Of the 12 applicants, Daniel Brigman of Newland, North Carolina, and superintendent of Avery County Schools and Clint Durley of Coalmont and director of schools at Grundy County withdrew from consideration.

The six candidates were selected during a special called school board meeting held on Monday night (January 9).

A first round of interviews is tentatively set to take place beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday, February 28.
