Obit – Mrs. Joyce Bains
A Christian Lady, loving wife, mother with guiding hands, doting grandmother, and a special sister, joined her Heavenly Father at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday morning March 25, 2026 surrounded by her family at their Hiwassee Road farm home. Mrs. Joyce Bains, age 69, was pronounced deceased at 10:56 a.m. by Gentiva Hospice of Livingston who had been assisting the family with her care in her final days.
Funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home were conducted Saturday morning March 28th with her minister Matt Oxley and former minister, Freddie Clayton, officiating. Burial followed in the Bethlehem Cemetery at Tuckers Cross Roads.
She was born Joyce Elaine Bennett in Carthage on September 26, 1956 and was one of four daughters and two sons of the late William Vaxter (Vax) Bennett who died September 7, 2007 at the age 78 and Laura Gaydell Dixon Bennett who died May 15, 2002 at the age of 74.
Two sisters preceded her in death, Willa Kay “Cricket” Bennett Martin who died at the age of 63 on December 24, 2015, Mattie Sue Bennett Washer who died at the age of 69 on January 13, 2020 and a brother, Steve Edward Bennett who died at the age of 53 on May 31, 2012.
At the Smith County Courthouse on March 9, 1974, she was united in marriage to Hiwassee Community native, Phillip Howard Bains.
Mrs. Bains for many years was a cook at the former P & K Market in the Rome Community and also was a child care provider.
She was a dedicated member of the Rome Church of Christ and as long as health permitted never missed a service. Mrs. Bains was baptized into Christ there on July 16, 1976. She was the kind of mother every child would be fortunate to have, who reared her children faithfully in the church, investing time in participating in Bible Bowls, Vacation Bible schools, youth events and other church functions.
Surviving in addition to her husband Phil, of just over fifty-one years, are their two children, Susan Bains Reeder and husband Jeremy, Daniel Bains and wife Lesa all of South Carthage; sister, Renae Powell and brother, Jr. Bennett both of South Carthage; six grandchildren, Kendall Bains, Hannah Reeder, Clayton Reeder, Evie Reeder, Connor Hughes and Braden Hughes.
The family requests memorials to the Rome Church of Christ.
