Bird finds home atop historic bridge
By Eddie West Staff Writer
To some it’s a bundle of sticks placed at an odd location.
For others it’s a curious sight to be checked out.
To others it’s a place to call home.
Maggart resident Richard Sevier dropped by the Courier office in Carthage Thursday shortly before noon, reporting he had discovered something out of the ordinary atop the Cordell Hull Bridge.
After a trip to Carthage, Sevier was leaving town, traveling in the direction of South Carthage on the Cordell Hull Bridge, when he happened to notice what appeared to be a bird’s nest on top of the truss section of the bridge on the Carthage side.
After crossing the bridge, the Maggart resident turned around in South Carthage for a closer inspection. While crossing the bridge a second time, Sevier could clearly see it was an over-sized bird’s nest. Sitting in the nest was what Sevier described as bird with a white head, appearing to be a bald eagle.
Since then others have witnessed the bird at its highly unusual location, speculating it may be an osprey.
