Work was ‘inspection’ of South Carthage bluff — TDOT says
By Eddie West Staff Writer
An “inspection” conducted by a Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) crew took place at a section of Highway 70 in South Carthage long eyed as a potential rock (bluff) mitigation project.
“Crews are inspecting this area, resulting in intermittent lane closures,” a TDOT spokesperson said, Wednesday.
The lane closures took place from Tuesday through Friday just east of Waggoner Street.
A section of the bluff from the South Carthage end of the Cordell Hull Bridge west to near Waggoner Street has long been eyed by TDOT as a potential rock mitigation project.
Those who routinely travel the route are well aware debris falling onto the roadway from the bluff is not uncommon.
During one incident the state highway had to be temporarily closed because of a rock slide.
One issue with shutting down Highway 70 in the area of proposed rock mitigation project has been a feasible detour route.
