REGION BUSINESS; Owls topple Marion, Sequatchie for crown

CARTHAGE — The Smith County High Owls baseball team faced off against Sequatchie County last Saturday morning for the Region 3-2A championship game in Carthage.
The winner of this game would host a two out of three sectional series while the loser went to the losers bracket.
Smith Co. won the region for the first time since 2018 with a 3-0 victory over the Indians to improve to 22-12.
The Owls will now face Westmoreland who was the Region 4-2A runner up with the winner of the sectional series advancing to the Class 2A state tournament at Spring Fling in Rutherford County. The tournaments will be held from May 19-22.
“It is exciting,” said Smith County head baseball coach Malone Smith. “We have worked really hard all year to get to this point and we planned on being here. We paid the piper to have fun in this moment. These guys are prepared. They can feel confident in the moment and just enjoy it. I am super proud of these guys. Hats off to Sequatchie County and Marion County, they were tough teams and those dudes gave us two good baseball games. Our guys are prepared, they are confident and you reap the benefits at that point.”
Smith continued, “Home field advantage is always a big deal and we love playing at home. It is something we are really looking forward to. Thanks to the fans for coming out today, be ready to pack the stands next week.”
