CARTHAGE — Last Tuesday night, the Gordonsville Junior High Tigers football team capped a perfect 8-0 season with a 32-0 Highland Rim Championship victory against Overton County Middle School.

The Junior High Tigers culminated their undefeated run with their third conference title in the last four seasons and claimed their second straight conference title.

Big Blue posted shutouts in five of the eight contests during their run to the HRC championship

“Defensively, Coach Bryant Goolsby did a great job all year putting in game plans and installing things we do in high school with this junior high bunch,” said GJHS head football coach Adam Shaw. “It always starts up front on either side of the ball. Our success was the strength of our defensive line. Trevor Bucher and Michael Maggart have been strong pieces of our lines all year long. We have had strong quarterback play all season as well with Carter Mason and Case Scurlock.”

Shaw continued, “Two seventh grade linebackers in Eli Bush and Walker Preston played all year — they flew around and made tackles. In our secondary, they were very trustworthy and they limited big plays in nearly every ball game. We gave up very few explosive plays.”

“All three levels of the defense was solid, trustworthy and dependable. We had depth in those spots with several of those guys subbing in and out.”

The Tigers championship clash against the Overton Co. Wildcats was rematch of the season opener where Gordonsville also claimed a 30-0 shutout victory.
