Obit – Mr. Barry Harville

Mr. Barry Harville age 75, a Vietnam Veteran of the Riddleton Community, died peacefully with family and friends present. He was pronounced deceased at 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon June 9, 2024 where he was admitted June 7th being treated for pancreatic cancer at the Highpoint Health – Riverview (formerly Riverview Regional Medical Center). Mr. Harville was diagnosed on May 15, 2024 with pancreatic cancer.

Bro. Floyd Massey assisted by Pastor Lanny Thomas officiated at the 11 a.m. Thursday morning June 13th funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial followed beside his wife in the College Park section at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.

He was the fifth of six children, five sons and a daughter, born to the late John Allen Harville who died April 6, 1984 at the age of 69 and Mary Florence Petty Harville who died January 20, 1990 at the age of 76 and was a twin to Terry and was born January 4, 1949 in Evansville in Vanderburgh County, Indiana.

Two siblings preceded him in death, an infant sister, Dina Sue Harville who was born July 11, 1947 and died May 4, 1948 and Bruce Edward Harville who died July 6, 2019 at the age of 63.

Mr. Harville was a member of the 1967 graduating class at Smith County High School where his majors were Science and Agriculture. He was in the ag class all four years, attended F. F. A. his sophomore year, participated in the skills contest his junior year, and his senior year was vice president of his F. F. A. class, was a member of the Pep Club, was in the auto mechanics class, and the V. I. C. A. club. 

It was stated of him in the “67 yearbook; “Silence gives consent”.

He was drafted into the United States Army and on March 27, 1968 was inducted into the military in Nashville, Tennessee and on March 17, 1970 he was honorably discharged at Fort Dix, New Jersey with the rank of Specialist 4th class.

Of his one year, eleven months, and 21 days of service, he was stationed overseas for one year, six months, and three days of his military service.

For his unwavering service he was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and an Expert Marksmanship Badge with an M-14 rifle.

At the home of Joy Faye Hunt Holmes and J. P. Holmes, he was united in marriage to Defeated Creek Community native, the former Vicki Teresa Woodard on March 15, 1974. She preceded him in death on October 18, 2022 at the age of 70.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Peggy Morgan Harville who died at the age of 19 on April 10, 1971.

Mr. Harville attended the Gordonsville United Methodist Church.

He is survived by two children, daughter, Peggy Harville Faustina of Carthage; son, Jason Harville and wife Lisa Kemp Harville of the Four-Way Inn Community; four grandchildren, Morgan Faustina Dodson and husband Conner, Lelani Faustina, all of Carthage, Grace and Gabe Harville both of the Four-Way Inn Community; one great-granddaughter, Emery Lee Dodson of Carthage; three brothers, Kenneth Harville of South Carthage, Bob Harville and wife Lien of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Terry Harville of the Horseshoe Bend Community.

The Harville Family requests memorial to one of the following; the McCrary Cemetery Mowing Fund, Jordan Hackett Foundation or the American Legion Post # 57.
