Obit – Mr. Roy Mathews
Mr. Roy Mathews of the Defeated Creek Community died at the age of 65 on Friday evening July 19, 2024 at the HighPoint Health-Sumner in Gallatin where he was admitted July 10th being treated for thyroid cancer.
Funeral services from the Hackett Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home were conducted Tuesday morning July 23rd with Pastor Don Jones officiating. Interment will follow beside his brother, Richard, in the Gazebo Garden at the Defeated Creek Memorial Gardens.
Born Roy Dallas Mathews in Indianapolis in Marion County, Indiana on December 11, 1958, he was one of five children, three sons and two daughters of the late Elton Dallas Mathews who died May 19, 2001 at the age of 72 and Willie Bell Petty Mathews who died February 25, 1979 at the age of 49.
He had recently experienced the loss of a brother, Richard Dean Mathews, who also died this year on January 19, 2024 as a result of cancer.
Prior to the death of Richard, the two brothers resided together at their Friendship Hollow Road South home.
Mr. Mathews was a 1978 graduate of Smith County High School where he participated in V. I. C. A. his junior and senior year and had a minor in agriculture.
He was employed for several years as an over the road truck driver for the former K & K Trucking Co. Following the closing of K & K and at the time of his death, he was employed with Averitt Express as a mechanic.
Mr. Mathews attended the Willette Church of Christ.
Surviving are two sisters, Carol Mathews Bradley of Lafayette, Judy Mathews McKinney and husband Tommy of Shelbyville; brother, Roger Mathews and wife Cathy of Lafayette.
