Obit – Mr. Vergil Gochcoff
Mr. Vergil Gochcoff age 90 of South Carthage ended his earthly journey at 5:10 a.m. Thursday morning October 10, 2024 with his son and daughter-in-law at his bedside at the Smith County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage where he had made his home since October 11, 2023.
Bro. Bobby Peoples officiated at the 3 p.m. funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon October 13th.
On Monday morning Mr. Gochcoff was flown to the Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall Michigan. Graveside services and interment on Wednesday afternoon October 16th were beside his wife of forty-six years in the Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens in the Emmett Charter Township in Battle Creek, Michigan.
He was one of three children of the late Karil and JoAnn Mateoff Gochcoff and was born Vergil Ciriloff Gochcoff in Bregove, Bulgaria on February 28, 1934.
His ancestors immigrated to the United States from Bulgaria through Ellis Island, New York.
Mr. Gochcoff was preceded in death by his daughter, Victoria Gochcoff De Mott who died in 2005 at the age of 52.
In Calhoun County, Michigan on May 27, 1953, he was united in marriage to the former Sharon Lou Boyce. She preceded him in death on May 8, 1999.
An honorably discharge Korean War veteran, he proudly served our country with the United States Marine Corps after having been inducted on January 31, 1953 in Detroit, Michigan until being honorably discharged with the rank of Sergent at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina on June 30, 1956.
He served in Korea for one year, two months and three days. For his dedicated service he was awarded Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
He was retired as an over the road truck driver after working for the United States Postal Service.
Mr. Gochcoff was a member of the Baptist Church.
For the past eleven years he had resided with his son and daughter in law in South Carthage after relocating from Bradenton, Florida.
Surviving are four children, Sheri Scott and husband Phil of Hendersonville, Vergil Gochcoff Jr. and Diana Gochcoff of South Carthage, Barbara Davis and husband Tony, Michael Gochcoff all of Bradenton, Florida; sister, Janet Gochcoff Abbaduska and Husband Robert (Bob) Abbaduski of Jenison, Michigan; brother, Frank Gochcoff and wife Patsy of Dandridge, Tennessee; fifteen grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
The Gochcoff family has requested memorials to either the American Cancer Society or to a Veteran’s charity.
