Obit – Mr. Larry “Shorty” Shoulders
Monoville Community resident, Mr. Larry “Shorty” Shoulders, died peacefully surrounded by his family at the age of 75 at 6:15 a.m. Friday morning October 27, 2023 at the Riverview Regional Medical Center in Carthage where he was admitted October 26, 2023 from his Key Hollow Lane following a lengthy illness.
Bro. Jimmy Gregory assisted by Bro. Chris Reagan officiated at the 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon October 29th funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. A longtime co-worker, Dallas Scott, delivered the eulogy. Burial followed beside Mr. Shoulder’s son, David, in the Garden of the Cross at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Shoulders was the oldest of four children and was born Larry Wayne Shoulders at the Martha Gaston Hospital in Lebanon on May 8, 1948 and was the son of the late Dayton Alvin Shoulders who died at the age of 84 on February 27, 2002 and Lonie Alice Gregory Shoulders who died at the age of 86 on January 16, 2011.
A brother, Gordon Ray Shoulders, preceded Mr. Shoulders in death on October 24, 2020 at the age of 66.
On September 2, 1967, Mr. Shoulders was united in marriage in South Carthage by the late Eld. Phocian Gibbs to Sullivans Bend Community resident, the former Sarah Darlene Dickens.
They were preceded in death by a son, David Anthony Shoulders who died in a single vehicle automobile accident in Trousdale County on August 4, 1989. David was only 18.
Mr. Shoulders was saved at an early age and was a member of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church in the Sullivans Bend Community.
Mr. Shoulders was a thirty eight year employee of D. T. McCall and Sons in Carthage and retired on July 11, 2011.
He was a longtime member of the Smith County Rescue Squad and an avid University of Tennessee football fan.
He enjoyed being on the outside and his favorite pastime was mowing grass.
Surviving besides his wife Darlene of over fifty six years is their daughter, Teresa Shoulders Elrod of South Carthage; grandsons, David Elrod and wife Abigail Zaffiro Elrod of Dixon Springs, Eric Kuster and wife Kaleigh Scott of Lafayette; sister, Anna Shoulders of South Carthage; brother, Bruce Shoulders and wife Melissa Armistead Shoulders of the Difficult Community.
