Mr. Richard Matthews of the Defeated Creek Community was pronounced deceased at 10:45 p.m. Friday evening January 19, 2024 at the age of 60 at the Riverview Regional Medical Center in Carthage after suffering a fatal heart attack at the family home on the Friendship Hollow Road.
Funeral services from the Hackett Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home were conducted on Wednesday afternoon January 24th at 1 p.m. Hugh Wayne Clark officiated and burial followed in the Mathews family lot in the Gazebo Garden at the Defeated Creek Memorial Gardens.
He was one of five children, two daughters and three sons, born to the late Elton Dallas Mathews who died May 19, 2001 at the age of 72 and Willie Bell Petty Mathews who died February 25, 1979 at the age of 49 and was born Richard Dean Matthews in Indianapolis, Indiana on May 30, 1963.
Mr. Matthews was a member of the 1981 graduating class at the Smith County High School and where he participated in agriculture classes and majored in the Trades classes.
He was a member of the Russell Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
Before becoming disabled, Mr. Matthews was an over the road truck driver for the former K & K Trucking Co. in Gordonsville.
Having never married, Mr. Matthews was a soft spoken and kind gentle giant and was the epitome of a gentleman.
Survivors include his two sisters, Judy Mathews McKinney and husband Tommy of Shelbyville, Carol Mathews Bradley of Lafayette, Roy Mathews of the Defeated Creek Community, Roger Mathews and wife Cathy of Lafayette.
