Obit – Mrs. Sarah Vance Halbert
Mrs. Sarah Vance Halbert age 87, a homemaker of the Taylorsville Community in Wilson County, died peacefully at 7:12 p.m. Friday evening May 3, 2024 at the Alive Hospice in Murfreesboro.
Funeral services from the Ligon and Bobo Funeral Home in Lebanon were conducted Tuesday afternoon May 7th at 1 p.m. with Eld. Jeff Blackwell and Mrs. Halbert’s nephew, Bro. Sam Vance, officiating. Burial beside her husband, Robert, followed in the Wilson County Memorial Gardens.
Born Sarah Vance in the Stonewall Community on July 6, 1936, she was one of four children, two daughters and two sons, and was the last surviving child of the late George Tillman Vance who died on November 11, 1939 at the age of 42 and Fannie Elnor Vaden Vance who died May 12, 1987 at the age of 80.
A sister, Lois Mai Vance, preceded her in death at the age of 82 on June 20, 2016 at the age of 82, two brothers, J. T. Vance who died at the age of 72 on January 12, 2003 and James Exum Vance who died at the age of 78 on March 11, 2011.
Mrs. Halbert was a member of the 1954 graduating class at Smith County High School in Carthage. There she was an outstanding member of the “Lady Owls” basketball team, participated in the Future Homemakers of America class was a member of the Hobby Club her freshman and sophomore years, and her senior year was a member of the Student Council, “Black & Gold” paper staff, the Glee Club, and the “C” Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert B. Halbert Sr. on October 3, 2020 at the age of 85.
Also preceding her in death was a grandson, Robert Nicholas “Nick” Forbes who died September 21, 2023 at the age of 33.
In her youth she attended the Caney Fork Missionary Baptist Church in the Helms Bend Community and following marriage and relocating to Wilson County she joined the Athens Missionary Baptist Church by experience and baptism and where she remained a faithful member as long as health permitted and a member until her death.
For over twenty years she was employed by the Wilson County School System as a teacher’s aid.
Surviving are her three children, Melinda Forbes and husband Mike, Robert “Bob” Halbert Jr. and wife Amy, Patrick Halbert and wife Carrie; six grandchildren, Kyle Forbes, Hannah Smith and husband Cody, Emily, Lucas, and Grant Halbert; six great-grandchildren, Troy, Carter, Eli, and Brooklyn Forbes, Case and Emma Kai Smith; one great-great-grandchild, Kenslei Forbes; brother-in-law, Hamlet Halbert, sister-in-law, Margaret Woodard Vance of Gordonsville.
The Halbert family requests memorials to the Athens Missionary Baptist Church.
