Obit – Mr. Hubert Culbreath Jr.
Longtime Carthage businessman and church leader, Mr. Hubert Culbreath Jr., died peacefully at the Pavilion in Lebanon where he had made his home since May 12, 2021. He was pronounced deceased at 6:24 a.m. Tuesday morning June 11, 2024.
His pastor, Eld. Dave Silcox assisted Eld. Shane Gregory at the 11 a.m. Saturday morning funeral services which was conducted from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial followed beside his wife Jean in section three at the Ridgewood Cemetery.
He was born Hubert Ray Culbreath Jr. in Lebanon on November 30, 1944 and was one of two children, a son and a daughter of the late Hubert Ray Culbreath Sr. who died April 19, 1995 at the age of 71 and Mable Louise House Culbreath who died August 5, 1986 at the age of 69.
Mr. Culbreath was preceded in death by his wife, the former Jean McKinney to whom he was united in marriage on October 10, 1960. She preceded him in death on January 7, 2018 at the age of 71 following almost fifty eight years of marriage.
Also preceding Mr. Culbreath in death was a brother, Jackie Agee, a grandson, Joey Albritton who died July 20, 2014 at the age of 31 and a granddaughter, Crystal Padgett who died April 27, 2019 at the age of 37.
Mr. Culbreath was saved at the age of 14 in July of 1958 and was baptized into the full fellowship of the South Carthage Missionary Baptist Church in September of 1958 by the late Eld. Phocian Gibbs, who was then church pastor.
He was ordained a Deacon on December 10, 1978.
Mr. Culbreath established the Smith County Carpet Center in 1973 and continued operating the business until retiring in 2000. His daughter and son continue the operation of the successful business today located on Dixon Springs Highway.
Survivors include his daughter, Shelia Culbreath Padgett and husband Don; a son, Buddy Culbreath and wife Lisa; three grandchildren, Savannah Culbreath Merrell and husband Bradley, Zachary Culbreath all of the Lock Seven Community, Daniel Padgett and wife Jada of the Kempville Community; six great-grandchildren, Kyle & Gabe Albritton, Tucker, Beau, Kolt and Kutler Padgett; sister, Carolyn Culbreath Mofield and husband Floyd of the Lock Seven Community; brother, James Agee of Nashville.
The Culbreath family has requested memorials to the South Carthage Missionary Baptist Church.
