Obit – Mrs. Evelyn Deering Brown
Mrs. Evelyn Deering Brown age 68, a beloved mother, “Granny E” and sister, went to be with her Lord and Savior at 6:20 p.m. Monday evening January 26, 2026 at her son and daughter-in-law’s home in Cookeville with family at her bedside.
The funeral services were scheduled to be conducted on Friday afternoon January 30th at 3 p.m. from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home with Edward L. Anderson officiating. Burial was to be near her parents in the Garden of the Cross at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.
Born Lillie Evelyn Deering in Carthage on October 7, 1957, she was the youngest of two daughters of the late William Ernest Deering who died at the age of 77 on November 17, 2009 and Lola Irene McGuire Deering who died at the age of 84 on February 19, 2020.
The father of her children, James Michael “Mike” Brown, died of apparent heart failure on September 10, 2018 at the age of 57.
She was a member of the 1975 graduating class at Smith County High School where she majored in home economics, was a class officer her sophomore year, and the pep club her freshman and sophomore year.
Evelyn was widely known by a multitude of people having been employed many years at the Wal-Mart Store in Carthage and later as manager of the Dollar Tree also in Carthage, from which she had retired in 2025.
While battling her cancer, she continued to work at the Dollar Tree and could still radiate a smile and interaction with all who she met.
She was well loved and respected by all who knew her, and loved her acquaintances and family unconditionally.
Evelyn never met a stranger and never shied away from a conversation. Her open heart and loving nature were the foundation for a multitude of longstanding relationships in her community.
She was a non-denominational Christian.
Survivors include her son, Shane Brown and wife Mindi of Cookeville, Latosha Brown Raines and husband Jonathan “Pee Wee” Raines of the Maggart Community; six grandchildren, Lucas and Dylan Raines, Cameron “Blake” and Chloe Quick, Kennedy and Ace Brown; sister, Dale Deering Drennon and husband Dwight of Lebanon; and many more cherished loved ones and friends.
