Obit – Walter Joseph DeLair Jr.

Walter Joseph DeLair Jr., 64, passed away on June 23, 2026, from complications related to a heart attack, just one day after celebrating his birthday. He was born on June 22, 1962.

Walt lived a life defined by hard work, adventure, laughter, and the relationships he treasured most. A proud Navy veteran, he dedicated himself to serving his country before building a career that reflected his strong work ethic and determination. Throughout his life, Walt worked in environmental cleanup, successfully operated his own business, and ultimately retired from Nashville MTA.

Walt never met a stranger. If his life were a Netflix documentary, people would say he could light up a room. Whether you knew him as Walter, Walt, Jody, or Wally, his sense of humor, larger-than-life personality, and ability to make people feel welcome left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

He loved to travel and especially enjoyed spending time with his beloved girlfriend, Alice. Whether exploring new places or simply enjoying everyday moments together, those memories brought him great happiness.

Walt is survived by his son, Chadrick DeLair; his daughter, Brandi Lyston; his grandchildren, Bennett Lyston, Ashlynn Lyston, Cadence Lyston, Elijah DeLair, and Caleb DeLair; his brother, Thomas Derry; his sisters, Melissa and Jessica DeLair and his girlfriend Alice McClain. He also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Beverly Rogers; his stepfather, William Rogers; his father, Walter DeLair Sr.; and his brother, Stephen Derry.

Walt’s legacy lives on in the stories he told, the laughter he shared, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave. He will be remembered for his unwavering work ethic, his adventurous spirit, and his ability to bring light and joy wherever he went.

To honor the many friendships and family connections Walt built throughout his life, two Celebrations of Life are being planned; one in Tennessee and one in Texas. Details for both gatherings will be shared at a later date.

Though he is no longer with us, Walt’s presence will continue to be felt in the hearts of all who loved him.
