Obit – Mr. Lee Davis

A longtime Carthage businessman and co-owner of Smith County Motors, Mr. Lee Davis age 70 of the Riddleton Community, died peacefully surrounded by his family at the TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville and was pronounced deceased at 5:12 p.m. Thursday evening June 13, 2024.

Mr. Davis was at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday afternoon June 18th at 1 p.m. from the Carthage United Methodist Church with former pastor, Dr. Jim Clardy of Murfreesboro the officiant. Burial followed in the Davis Family lot in the Garden of Gethsemane at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.

He was born Harry Lee Davis Jr. at the former Petty-Green Clinic in Carthage on December 10, 1953 and was one of three children, a son and twin daughters, of the late Dalton, Georgia native Harry Lee Davis Sr. who died May 22, 1993 at the age of 71 and Elizabethtown, Kentucky native, the former Clara Kerrick Davis who died January 11, 2012 at the age of 88.

Mr. Davis was a 1972 graduate of Smith County High School and had a triple major in science, math, and social studies. He was a member of the Pep Club all four years and served as the vice-president his senior year, He was on the “Owl” football team all four years, was a member of the “C” club his final three years of high school, was a member of the Jr. play cast, was on the student council his junior year and served as vice-president, and his senior year was voted by his classmates as the Best All Around boy student.  

He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where he earned a Bachelor Degree in Business. 

At the Plunketts Creek Missionary Baptist Church on July 1, 1978, he was united in marriage to Beasley Bend Community native, the former Pamela Jane Hiett. The ceremony was performed by the late and then church pastor, Eld. Walter Deweese.

His family had been involved in Smith County Motor Co., then the Ford automobile franchisee for Smith County, since his father, Harry purchased a portion of the business form the late Woodrow Piper. It was relocated from downtown to the present location on Highway # 25 (Dixon Springs Highway) in 1966.

Active in community affairs, he was a Past President of the Smith County Chamber of Commerce and a Past President of the Carthage Lion’s Club where he was active in both organizations.

Mr. Davis was a member of the Carthage United Methodist Church where he served for several years as the Superintendent of the Sunday School program.

Surviving in addition to his wife Pam, of almost forty six years are their two children, Meagan Davis Sanders and husband Eli of Neptune Beach, Florida, Jeffrey Davis and wife Lauren Medley Davis Carthage; four grandchildren, Charlie Beth and Andi Grace Davis, Davis Sawyer and Jack Shepherd Sanders; Lee’s twin sisters, Suzanne Davis Gammon and husband Jerry of the Tanglewood Community, Suzette Davis Long and husband Alan of the Turkey Creek Community.

The Davis family has requested memorials to either the First Baptist Church Gordonsville or the Carthage United Methodist Church Building Fund.
