County property tax rate set
By Eddie West Staff Writer
The county’s property tax will remain unchanged.
Commissioners adopted a property tax rate of $1.73310 for each $100 of taxable property during their August meeting last week.
Of the $1.73310 property tax rate, $1.05756 is allocated for the general fund; .05150 to the highway/public works; .48904 to general purpose school; .07000 general debt service and .06500 to capital projects.
The property tax levy was set by county commissioners prior to approval of the county’s 2024-2025 fiscal year budget.
While the county’s upcoming fiscal year budget has increased expenditures, a property tax increase was not needed because of the county surplus fund balance.
During a marathon four and a-half hour meeting, all but the school system budget was approved.
Commissioners approved an appropriation of $38.1 million for the school system, leaving school officials to have to set a 2024-2025 fiscal year budget within those funds.
The proposed 2024-2025 fiscal year school budget as presented to commissioners included additional funds.
All proposed budgets, had the okay of the county’s Budget and Finance Committee as presented to the full commission Monday night besides the school system’s budget.
