Obit – Mrs. Gladys C. Michaels
A precious soul, Mrs. Gladys C. Michaels of River Pointe in South Carthage has departed her heavenly journey to enter the gates of glory. She was pronounced deceased at 5:40 a.m. Saturday morning July 26th at the Smith County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage, fourteen days after her 84th birthday. Since July 12th she had been receiving respite care at the facility.
Mrs. Michaels was at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Graveside services and interment will be conducted by her grandson, Bro. Derry Lomax, on Saturday morning August 16th at 10 a.m. at the Tyree Cemetery on Fox Run Lane in River Pointe.
The family will receive friends following the service at the Voelker home at 18 Fox Run Lane adjoining the cemetery.
A native of Paris in Henry County, Tennessee, she was born Gladys Christine Hartzfield on July 11, 1941 and was the eldest of five children of the late John David Hartzfield who died in 1967 at the age of 61 and Maggie Earline Byars Hartzfield.
Preceding her in death was a sister, Carol Jane Wade who died October 31, 2000 at the age of 56 and a brother, David Hartzfield JR. who died in Oakland in Almeda, County, California.
Mrs. Michaels was a 1969 graduate of San Diego High School and had a Bachelors Degree in computer science and a double Masters in education from the University of Tennessee at Martin and Southern Illinois University.
She was a retired social worker working in education with abused children.
Her husband, Robert James Michaels, to whom she was married December 12, 1977 in San Diego, California, preceded her in death in March of 2016 following over thirty-eight years of marriage.
Mrs. Michaels was a member of the Rural Hill Church of Christ in Antioch in Davidson County.
The family relocated to River Pointe from Wilson County in March of 2024 and had previously resided in San Diego, California.
Mrs. Michaels was a kind, sweet spirited lady and was an inspiration to all who knew her.
Surviving are her five children, Brenda Freeman Voelker and husband David of River Pointe in South Carthage, Lisa Carol Teague and husband Larry of Paris, Tennessee, Staci Mallett Brown and spouse Karen of Springfield, Tennessee, Audrey Gail Michaels of San Diego, California, Robert Junior Michaels II also of San Diego; three surviving siblings, Jerry Sue Hartzfield of Elmhurst, Illinois, Nancy Ada Hartzfield of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Johnny Mae Hartzfield of Chicago, Illinois; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
